This could help many students take a quick look at an e-book to verify or check some info while studying, instead of lugging around a ton of books

Some people want powerful laptops with smaller displays (12in PB is no more) or less powerful laptops with larger displays (15in iBook is no more). Hopefully Apple learns to stop limiting themselves in this way. Think differently differently.

OK, so their inital aim was implicitly to get in-the-face of smug Mac users. And then Apple "leans" on them, so they go all nicey-nice and 'decide' to a USB wifi card instead? Doesn't this seem slightly odd to anyone else?

All I care about right now is if this will run on a Mac pro 1,1. And if so, and it is using all cores finally, will there be a big performance increase on my system over my current FCP6.
If the answer is yes to both I'm in. I won't be impressed however if they artificially lock out older Macs.

PC sales are shrinking because of stagnation in the primary driving force for selling new PC hardware.
Games.
Gamers now have 4 platforms to choose from (smart phone, console, hand-held, PC), and game developers are putting LESS dollars into high end PC titles and concentrating on consoles for their premium products.
With no Diablo 3 (or whatever) to entice me with gameplay I can't find anywhere else, I have much less of a reason to play games on my PC rig, much less upgrade it.
When it comes to writing emails or checking facebook, a smart phone or tablet will do that just as well as a PC.
Macs have never been gaming machines, so they are immune from that particular effect. It is 'trendy' to have a macbook right now (seriously, go to a coffee shop and tell me what you see), and the vast majority of their sales are to less-technology/gadget-savvy users who have bought their Mac because of other people telling them that Macs are good, rather than the hardware, specs, or software on the computer.
In the end, it is all marketing... which is the case with most of Apple's products. They have been selling PC hardware now for years at a higher price than their competitors. Windows 7 isn't any worse (or better) than MacOS for browsing the web or checking email..... so its not the OS that is influencing soccer moms and emo kids to buy Mac either.

That's true. If you skip a OS X release, you're still fine. Skip Vista and you'll probably be a decade behind at some point. I get the point of what txa1265 was saying.. lots of these bands like Pink Floyd and Led Zep were either influenced or used the rock beats that the Beatles created/expanded upon.
A better group comparison would be Black Sabbath, who were totally inspired by the Beatles. Simply playing both bands' songs side by side isn't how to compare, but more on a deeper musical level. The underlying parts.
Given all that, I know many people that don't like the Beatles but like other bands that may/may not have been directly influenced by them.

Anyone tell me what good is a 64-bit processor other than being able to address more RAM. I know a 64-bit address bus alone doesn't make a 64-bit processor.
Not a lot of difference at the moment is the short answer. Usually the benefit of 64 bit chips is that they also come wwith more registers or bigger caches, or more fucntional units etc etc which is where the performance increase is.
I also heard these are not "true" 64-bit processors, just the same old x86 processors w/ 64-bitty goodness added on. Any truth to this?

The Bible says many good things and many bad things. I was highlighting some of the bad things to show how people do pick and choose. Consider Deuteronomy 13-

This is pretty clear, and no amount of fitting in with the rest of the Bible or whatever is going to help. Thankfully, people ignore this today. In other words, people apply a moral standard when reading the Bible. The Bible doesn't lead to morality.

From a theological stand point it's purpose was to show that no amount of work or good behavior can bring one to God. The law serves to highlight our separation from God in that none of us can measure up. The wages of sin are death and thus under the law death was the punishment. Under the new covenant Christ's death has paid the price of sin and we no longer need to live under the law.
So you see, you are guilty of doing what it is you are saying that others are doing. You are picking/choosing a verse out of the old testament and presenting it as if it was a universal command to all believers for all time.
It's like when you tell a child to play in the front yard but not to cross the street. You are giving them a specific command for a specific time with a specific purpose in mind (their safety). It would be silly to say that your intention was for that child to never cross a street in their life. They are forever forbidden from leaving the front yard because at one point you told them not to cross the street.

People often make the error of thinking the Bible is written like an instruction manual or a recipie book. It's not that simple. In case this of use to anyone, I have a week 23 2.0Ghz macbook which was demonstrating no random shutdowns or any other problems prior to the 1.1 update. After the update, my system idle temperature has dropped by about 10 degrees C, from ~50-52 degrees to ~40-44. Nothing has appeared to have broken and temperatures under max load remain unchanged at around 73-76 degrees.
An interesting change appears after the machine has run at full load. The fans now run until the CPU temp has scaled back to the low 40s, whereas before the update they stopped running at full tilt once the CPU temp had reached around 50 degrees.

I actually did get confirmation that my battery qualified. Took me awhile to get onto the page, but it finally worked. After that, it let me fill out a form to send me a new battery.
I'm not too bummed this has happened; after all, my battery is only holding about 90% of its original charge. However, it's funny that I've already had a battery recalled for my 18-month old PowerBook (15-inch) so this will be the third battery for me.

Yes, this had certainly occurred to me, and I think it's a fair guess. But I don't think I'd gallop off to "this is a total non-issue" from here. That's all I'm saying. Again, not panicked, but I think this should be pursued in the long term. There is a valid point in that the "seeking a network" activity of wifi cards in general offers a potential vector for exploits.

I just wonder if there is any upgrade pricing strategy. No matter what - $299 is A STEAL!
From watching the video, I got the impression that there won't be an upgrade version of Final Cut Pro or an Express version. However they did say they haven't shown the rest of the apps off yet, but what remains to be seen is whether they will just offer each app individually on the app store or package them in a retail box as well. I personally can't see how they can get people to download 40GB odd of content, so I am hopeful they will still offer the full studio package with upgrade pricing.

my battery is one of the one's that needs replaced, but the website won't take the serial number (verified by someone at apple) and tech support is clogged for the day, so hopefully sometime later this week i can get a battery sent to me. anyway, if anyone else goes there and has the 5 digit number in the range but it won't take your serial number be sure to call apple because it could be a website error.
That's what happend to me. Called Apple support. They were great. The lady I spoke with said that there were errors happening on the website, but she was able to get it through by changing my serial number. She said she was using the recall website.
