I think it's a computer that will fit inside your home and possibly carry around with you (There's something in the Air), that can use your modem's telephone line to connect to the WWW and display text and graphics.

Ha that technology is years off. rtard.

Here's the deal: Now that cell phone sensors are approaching a decent quality, they will need good optics or it doesn't matter. That's where, I believe, Sony comes in. If you just throw in "MOAR MEGAPIXELS" then you've already lost. Looks great on a stats sheet for Android noobs, looks bad as a print (or at the least not any better than a lower mp sensor).

Stats don't matter. That's what all the PC people say about Thunderbolt. Unless they got it first. Then any notebook without it would be considered worthless. Like a Mac and what they would then call its "legacy I/O." Lol...

My first dSLR was a Canon Rebel XT. It had an 8mp sensor. Crazy to think my phone will have one too, despite the noise, inferior optics and lack of control. But still, crazy! And probably 1080p video too.

All I can say is this iPhone 5 better come in 64GB and 128GB sizes! I'm already out of room on my 32GB model. I hope there is a setting for video quality. 720p is fine for casual videos. If I actually need 1080p (for legit work), I'll use my 7D + L optics, thank you very much! Haha. But it's inevitable.

Just wondering, does the aluminum material prevent them from manufacturing white models? I prefer white over all the available colours, and it'll prolly go better with my MacBook.

The aluminium case is anodised, which adds a hard, protective coating and a choice of colours. I'm sure that white anodising is not an option, I have yet to see it on mountain bike parts and they are available in many more colours than the ones offered by Apple.

Also, the reason only the 8GB model is available in black won't be down to cost, black and silver are the most common colours used for anodising.

A child does not naturally grow up to be socially responsible or kind. They naturally grow up to be self-centered and violent unless a parent or authority teaches them otherwise.

As negative as I think religion can be, it has set a code of conduct for people that enables cooperation and empathy for others. Although we don't need religion to teach people morals, we need some agreed upon code of conduct.

You might say that the laws of a country serve that purpose, but they don't. They are simply rules everyone must follow and any despotic ruler can set awful laws that can hurt people. Therefore, the code of conduct has to be separate from the law.

If atheism has any future, its needs some type of unified, agreed upon code.

Oh please. I find nothing positive about scaring children with a bunch of lies to get them to behave.

Users don't care about flash, they care about websites. Some site developers seem to care more about Flash than about their users. Therefore, we get crappy Flash "websites" that don't work for the users. Who is at fault here? The developer.

your argument is subjective. while i agree with you that some flash sites can be a bit heavy, there are a lot that work very well. some even have quicker load time that static HTML/Javascript/CSS/Images. here's a site i've developed earlier this year which i like to believe is fairly light weight (http://www.deskguise.com) (click the character's nose!), it allows for back/forward, deep linking and SEO functionality, while including animations that are currently not possible with HTML/CSS.

HTML/CSS will not compete with flash in the future. however, WebGL certainly will. WebGL is going to be great!

It's the developer's job to use technologies that will be future-proof and well, not suck.

technologies change all the time and the best developers learn how to adapt to the constant change using the best production tools they can. so while (as i mentioned) WebGL will give adobe a run for their money, it's unlikely that adobe will simply quit development for flash, which by the way has been around since the mid 90s. flash will only become more advanced.

I'm seriously amazed that ANYONE is defending Apple here.

    w00master

Have you not understood a single post discussing the merits of Apple approving apps? The simple fact is that it is a good idea. Apple's execution is somewhat flawed and could certainly be improved.

ETA: Deleted my first post, as there is now an updated Apple link. :p

I'll have to check my iBook tonight, to see if I have one of the batteries. I'm guessing I do; I purchased my iBook in February and am still using the original battery. Oh well; it was ready for a new battery, anyway.

Steve looks unhealthy. He's not as sharp as he used to be. His keynotes were flawless. He stuttered several times, forgot what he was saying in mid sentence, and handed a considerable amount of the keynote to other people. Steve was a control freak in past WWDC keynotes.

I think he may be in not-so-good health. But I've said that before.

He might be a little under the weather, but he'll be fine. If you go back and watch the video from the WWDC '05 he looked totally out of place; dressed in all black and very little energy. It's a fluxional phenomenon with his appearance. WWDC '05 he looked terrible, Apple Special Event #1(Intel iMac & iPod Nano) he looked great, Apple Special Event #2 (iPod Video) he looked great, Macworkd '06 he looked fine, Apple Special Event #3(iPod HiFi announcement) he looked like he had just woke up.

The one thing to remember is that this is a Developer's Conference so there is not going to be a lot of pizazz with flashy announcements. There was not a whole lot of new mind-blowing things announced so he could have been a little bit bored with it.

No matter what, with the transition to Intel chips complete now Apple can start devoting more time to truly new designs and hardware.

Quite obviously you are not the target audience in your Ford Escape.

The original conversation was in reference to someone who drove a V10 Excursion. A vehicle that weighs 8,000lbs.

The Excursion hasn't been in production for a few years. Of course the Expedition and Suburban are still around, but there are actually people who need those types of vehicles. I am a single person so an Escape is all the SUV I need, but if I was married and had 4 or 5 kids then an Expedition, Sequoia, Tahoe or Suburban might make sense. My point was let people buy what they want to buy according to their needs. I would feel silly in a full-sized SUV by myself, but if I had a large family or needed the hauling capacity it would make sense. I don't see a lot of single people without families driving around in Excursions, Expeditions or Suburbans. In fact, out of all the people I know I can't say I know one who has one of those vehicles and doesn't have a family. Now I know a few single people with F-150's, but then again this is South Dakota and people love their pickups.

I'm not even sure how the whole SUV driver thing in relation to where people shop got started. I am sure you there are plenty of very affluent people driving Escalades, Navigators, and Lexus full sized SUV's down to their local Apple store to buy an iPad so what does it matter?

Frankly I don't know if Bluetooth would solve the wire problem. But your point is well taken a wireless drive would have its own advantages. Something would be needed of course as I'm not dismissing the need for an optical drive from time to time. My big problem with optical hardware is that it increases weight and decreases reliability.

One obvious answer would be a mini Wifi server of one or more CDROM's. That sort of arrangement would certainly have the bandwidth needed. In either case you are making use of radio technology so that in and of itself is a power issue. On the other hand if the drive isn't in the laptop it can never be a power burden.

In any event I still believe that Apple would be better off putting Compact Flash or other memory device slots in its machines. They are already a better choice than CDROM's for many uses and of special interest to photographers and other professionals. The goal should be reliable low power operation.

    Dave

Is the bandwith of Bluetooth less than a CD or DVD reader?

It would be cool to have a bluetooth CD/DVD reader. If that worked it be so tight. No wires. And you could stack them and create a laptop with 5 optical drives. :p

Well, they find a problem and Apple responds in less than a day! No matter whose fault it was, Apple's computers had an obscure security hole and I applaud them for fixing it... not sure why everyone is getting all defensive over this one. Apple has already fixed the problem with the latest OS X security update, and I would guess Microsoft has done the same thing:

The update to WebKit resolves an issue where a maliciously-crafted HTML document could cause a previously deallocated object to be accessed, leading to an application crash or arbitrary code execution.

Really seems like a non-event to me as Macbook users (I wouldn't be scared to claim 100% of them) use their internal airport cards, not the silly USB one that opened up a security hole before this seurity update existed.

I mean if you install ARD and give someone the password then they can have complete control over your computer maybe that should reach front page as the main headline.

why would u really need a better resolution for the iSight?

Use it as a video/security/iChat/Games camera.
Use it for higher quality still shots.
Have improved video chat quality when real broadband speeds available. I have 1meg up 8meg down, that should be fast enough for some decent video.

    its stupid

all most people do is take funny pics of them-selves and do iChat

Because the current quality is so low...
And I think you'll find that people do more than that.
And even if thats all they do why not have a higher resolution? Seems plenty of people are doing these things.

if u increase the quality of the iSight for iChat, then it slows the video down
it also will be jerky because the file is large

If you have average machines and broadband yep it does. Whereas if you have more potent dual intel machines, mpeg4 and decent ADSL2+ etc, then you can get better quality video...iChat can already support 4 people communicating now, so 2 communicating with higher bandwidth should be easy *sigh*

and a wireless iSight will just make iChat even slower

Really? How fast is wireless...mmm...up to 54mbps...how fast is decent broadband...1-2mbps up stream...gee wireless is like 25x faster than it needs to be to keep the frame rate up for broadband. Even at range it should be faster.

And there are PLENTY of high end (Axis etc) wireless security cameras out there right now using G to pump back MPEG4 video wirelesly. I even have one.

Maybe you should do some research first before calling people stupid ;)

Web developers need to use approved open standards and stop using Flash as a crutch. And if by Apple's own image, you mean far superior open standards that are approved by the W3C, then yes!
How is using what's often times necessary a crutch? Trying putting any kind of multimedia on your website or handling reliable file uploads and you'll quickly see why you need Flash to reach the broadest audience. Developers have been shouting to the W3C for years for what we need and HTML5 still doesn't address much of the stuff you'd rely on Flash for.

Sadly, most Flash use is gratuitously used by developers with no html standards based alternative (which is stupid to say the least) so Flash gets a bad rap but when it's done well, it blends right in. There's a reason why Yahoo, Gmail, youtube, vimeo, etc. all use flash.

It's funny because there are devices that allow you to do these things.
Apple allows the normal people to move forward in the technology world.

You're right. Apple is a prime example of making otherwise foreign technology mainstream with a little cachet. Sounds simple, but it ain't.

That was actually a hack of a wireless USB card, not a hack of the Mac itself; the Mac was just used for publicity. The hack only works with this wireless USB card, not with the built-in wireless. The news stories attached to this stunt were quite misleading...

Plugging a wireless USB card into any computer is just like handing a hacker your keyboard, the computer handles it just like any other input device. So, if you handed a hacker your keyboard and didn't encrypt and password protect your files, would you expect the OS to protect them?

Also if im not mistaken, the guy actually had to use the mac to get connected to the PC so really its showing us shitall!

...I can tell you as someone who works with hackers (half of my buddies are at BlackHat this week) that OS X is NOT inherently secure, and that there are plenty of vulnerabilities that surface on it that are well-known in the "hacker" community long before they are made "public," and also long before they are also repaired by Apple.

OS X is definitely inherently more secure than Windows, but the near-complete lack of viruses/use of other exploits for them is definitely not because they are ironclad in terms of security. That should be abundantly clear from a cursitory reading of the kbase article on the latest security update. Many of those fixes were to rootkit holes! As in, god-sized sized security holes...

I've always told, or at least tried to say, that Macs were more secure than Windows and did not have the same vulnerabilities, nor the number of viruses and other associated bits of malware. Macs are immune to many things, but you're absolutely right, they're not invulnerable.

One thing to note is this particular vulnerability also affects Windows, so if we're still comparing the two against each other this vulnerability doesn't exactly tip the scales.

The main thing, sadly, is the lack of positive male role models (most gun crime is committed by black men, so Aunt Jemima wouldn't be suitable for them, not sure about Uncle Ben).

Yeah, I said announced. Leopard has been announced since Macworld. That photo may have shown us the cover, but that is not groundbreaking and as nice as it is, as previously mentioned I'm sure it won't be the final disk label. In the words of MosDef, they ain't sayin' nothin' new...

Actually it was announced at last years WWDC. And I'm pretty sure that is final since they changed it from what they showed perviously. ;)
