Shouldn't the Conroe CPUs run at higher frequencies than the CPUs used in the iMacs?

Yup. PC's will be running faster, cheaper and slightly more powerful (per clock) chips.

    iStat nano widget

I have a question; I run istat nano widget, but have never gotten the temperature readout to work (everything else works fine). Is there something I need to do/can do to get it to register, or does this mean something is messed up on my computer?

Notice the phone besides the ipod and itunes? This page is about podcasts and what is a phone doing there alongside ipod and itunes? Does this spell something
about what we all wanted from apple: the iphone? Just my 2 cents. Leopard rox!

    And it will be called:

    iPad 3D.

You heard it here first folks.

No, I actually heard it first from the guy a few spots above you...

    "iPad 3 - iPad 3D

I could really see that, with the iPhone 3G (it was actually the 3rd phone) and had 3G."

I really do think many consumers are really going to be confused with Vista's pricing system and suckered into buying a more expensive product.

After reading this article (http://gizmodo.com/343246/what-to-expect-at-macworld-2008-and-why-we-think-it-will-bigger-than-usual) I think that it's entirely possible that Apple are altering their branding. Also the lack of an Apple logo could be explained by the fact that everyone at the expo would recognise it as them anyway and it adds to the air of secrecy and mystery that they love to use in their marketing.

    That reads rather oddly.

Perhaps this can clear this up for you.

Let's return to the article (http://mondediplo.com/2008/02/05military) from La Monde Diplomatique...

In an important exegesis on Melman’s relevance to the current American economic situation, Thomas Woods writes: “According to the US Department of Defense, during the four decades from 1947 through 1987 it used (in 1982 dollars) $7.62 trillion in capital resources. In 1985, the Department of Commerce estimated the value of the nation’s plant and equipment, and infrastructure, at just over _$7.29 trillion… The amount spent over that period could have doubled the American capital stock or modernized and replaced its existing stock”

The fact that we did not modernise or replace our capital assets is one of the main reasons why, by the turn of the 21st century, our manufacturing base had all but evaporated. Machine tools, an industry on which Melman was an authority, are a particularly important symptom. In November 1968, a five-year inventory disclosed “that 64% of the metalworking machine tools used in US industry were 10 years old or older. The age of this industrial equipment (drills, lathes, etc.) marks the United States’ machine tool stock as the oldest among all major industrial nations, and it marks the continuation of a deterioration process that began with the end of the second world war. This deterioration at the base of the industrial system certifies to the continuous debilitating and depleting effect that the military use of capital and research and development talent has had on American industry.”

I believe this helps to explain what is meant by "diverts resources from productive uses, such as consumption and investment".

My battery life issue was fixed by turning off the failed music social network PING in the restrictions settings. Once I did that, I get at least 48-72 hours standby if not more and hours of usage and the battery barely budges. It should be turned OFF by default, can anyone with 4.3.1 confirm that PING is in the OFF position at startup?

I don't think that anyone who has A Clue doesn't know this already.
The ilk of people who think it's immune are the same ilk of people that don't understand why their WindowsPC is running so "slowly".

I just resent being called smug.

I also resent blackhatters who are new to the OS X game getting all rightous. Where were they the last 5 years? They're part of the REASON "mac users are so smug about security".
I did not intend to call you smug; I apologize if you took it that way... I was responding to your assessment of how "hackers" view Mac Users/The Mac Community.

I think that there are actually a good deal of people with A Clue (in general) that don't understand much about OS X security. I was speaking with hyperbole--I think a lot of people who do have this clue thing think that it's somewhat hard to write viruses for OS X... Apple certainly advertises it horrendously these days.

As for blaming BlackHatters for our ignorance about security issues, I think that you need to get that clue thing for saying that. And as for smug OS X newcomers, you would do well to remember that OS X is MOSTLY *nix at the base. You don't have to be a hardened OS X developer to futz around in it.

I went over a store lately where they sell macs and other stuff like fridges , phones , televisions , pc's , ...
In that store I was interested in the 17" mbp and the salesman said it was the last one they had and they gave a discount of 200 because they couldn't order a new one.
Then I made the hard choice :( of waiting till the new one comes out.
So only buy when you really need it.:D

Wow! The battery on my october 2003 iBook completely died ages ago (killed by a faulty power supply), and I haven't been able to justify the cost of a new one. Now I'm getting a new battery free!! Sweet!

In the mean time... unplugging the little sucker. No exploding iBooks in my office! ;)

PS: iBook batteries ZZ338 - ZZ427 are also mentioned on the exchange website, but not in the MR front page story.

I'm with you on both items. I've been psyched for iPhone 5 to replace my 3GS, but for LTE I might be convinced to wait... (Then again my 4G friend says Boston has spotty coverage at the moment...)

As for the voice thing - I don't think I've ever used it nor really want to. To those that do use it - why? Is this a feature that car drivers use a lot?

they have got to get battery life under control or get LTE available in more places.

have been testing a VzW Tbolt and man its terrible in non-LTE areas on the battery.

i will not, however, give up on my iPhone. LTE or not, upgrading will happen. add me to the line of sheep. :)

So I guess then if there are no new products, why does the screen on the MBP seem so much taller than the actual cpu. Look at the picture where it is turned sideways...

It may just be me, but I dont recall the MBP having an inch of screen hanging over the CPU.

The issue with Verizon (and probably other carriers) isn't a "mother may I..." issue of sending the updates over 3G, the issue is probably exempting the OS updates from any transfer caps.

In other words, to not have the 500MB iOS update apply to the 200MB or 2GB/mo or 5GB/mo data cap. This might require Apple to grease the skids with a little cash for Verizon and AT&T, or limit updates to WiFi only.

That said, Apple in general needs to get a better handle on their update package sizes. I've got 3 Macs, 2 iPads and 2 iPhones on my home internet connection. Its 300-500MB (occasionally more) per Mac each time Apple releases a OSX point release (about every other month), 500MB for each iOS update (every other month) times four devices. So I'm looking at a maximum of 3.2GB of just Apple updates each month. This doesn't include updating iTunes, iPhoto, MS Office, etc.

    Did someone say gun ownership?

    http://www.gun-control-network.org/International.gif

Well, just accentuates the fact that the UK isn't run by a bunch of idiots. Knowing France well, it's appalling the figures being shown there. The french government is a joke, somewhat corrupt and is just a poorly governed country. It seems to me the good people suffer whilst the bad people get away with it, truly despicable.

I know they hospitalise children under 18 for mental illness, the UK doesn't do that and I don't know any other nation which does that. SURELY It's ridiculous for people who aren't even adults to be in mental institutes for weeks and even months? Won't that in fact affect their mental stability by being with other Ill patients?

Spent about an hour on the phone getting through to Apple. I too was having a problem with getting the web site to accept my batteries serial number. I was told that they were aware of the problem and to try later. I waited about two hours and tried again. This time the serial number went through fine. I suspect that matter is simply one of server overload.

There is no need to submit a bogus SN to get a replacement of a battery that is clearly within range. The only reason (if indeed it is a reason) to submit a bogus SN is one of greed.

Greed, i was entitled to a replacement battery........i did nothing wrong.....i am only getting what Apple and Sony owe me........

Some of you are predicting big Beatles sales if they go online. Others claim that the market is gone for those tunes. I'm happy to wait and see who's right, but I wish they'd finally get started so we can find out, rather than see "Beatles on iTunes" continue to be yet another Apple rumor that persists for years.

"Move on"? :( Seems kind of testy.
Not testy, just telling you my way of dealing with d-bags.
My point being, playing with randoms is inevitable, and a necessity. After all, if one didn't play with randoms, how would one meet 'nice players' to add to your friend's list?
Sure, playing with randoms is going to happen. But my point is, if you play 5 games of Team Slayer, the chance that all 35 of the randoms you would play against are jerks is minimal, at best. In 5-10 games, you could find yourself 15-20 good, polite players to add to your friends list, and never have to deal with it again.
I imagine it isn't hard to do, but Live seems to be made to play with players from all over. Playing games with only friends, seems to be rather counter productive.
My friends list isn't filled with only people I know in real life. I have friends from all over, that I've met playing all kinds of games, and meet more all the time when my friends bring in some of their friends to play. I'm not suggesting you build up a wall, and close the community out, just to make sure the d-bags don't get to you. I'm just saying, the tools are available, and if you use them properly, your experience will be much better.

Playing with friends not only rids you of having to play with crappy randoms, but it also adds more fun to it as well. If you play with people you know, the communication is better, the team play is better, and often times you'll win more. To me, that seems like the ultimate objective. Have fun and win. I accomplish that by playing primarily with friends. You're free to do whatever you want.
The issue being that Halo proportionately seems to have a greatest number of jerks playing, as compared to say other games. The shame is that even Bungie realized the crappier part of their community, and made such settings as hearing only your team, or even an option to mute all other players.
As I mentioned earlier, when you have one of the largest online communities, you will, by nature of the Law of Averages, have a large number of jerks. No game is immune to this. Forza, COD, Warhawk, Uncharted 2, Burnout, etc. I can't think of a single game that I've played online in which I haven't run into online d-bags. It is just the way the online community works (see PA comic below ;)). MacRumors is a nice, big online community, based around a simple consumer electronics company. That doesn't mean there aren't jerks abound in here. Instead of saying it's a "shame" that Bungie gives those options, you should be happy they do, use them, and then start wondering why more games don't.

I love new technology and faster speeds, etc as much as the next guy... but personally I'd prefer the cell providers to work on other things:

    Better speeds in crowded areas.
All the areas that have Edge (or less) having 3G.
ALL the rural areas that have NO service... having service.

I was driving back home from Mt. Washington this weekend and each time I'm up there, it amazes me how many roads have NO service. There's really no excuse. With the money these companies make.. it's a safety issue.
